November 4th -2008

More than five years in America...and I never felt proud to be here. It was always at the back of my mind, that I have left my home country and family back to be lured by the glamor, life of America. And that guilt always surfaced at times, times when you see those patriotic movies, times when you hear about your countrymen dying of blasts, and you feel like a coward having migrated here.

But tonight for the first time in more than five years, I feel to be proud in America. And not because it still is the best country on earth, and not because it still remains the superpower whose fortune affects countries worldwide...no. Its because it proved today what I always felt was the best part of this country, its conscientious.

Conscientious...a heavy word. Yes, we know that life is about happiness, success, wealth, being famous etc ... but nobody talks about this word. It means someone who operates from their conscience, and will strive to be just. People who are aware of their responsibilities.

I have often told my near and dear ones, that for a person like me to survive in India would have been very difficult. Not that things aren't great back home, but Indians on a collective level are not conscientious. We will take bribe, we will lie, cheat, manipulate....do anything in our capacity to succeed. Have you ever seen the top bosses in any Indian sector. Favoritism is the major major factor for success in India, and hard work and intelligence is secondary. A country more racist than anywhere else. A south Indian will be discriminated in Delhi, Biharis will be beaten up in Maharashtra. We will mix water in milk, we will sell fake Chinese electronics with branded names. Some army people can come and take away your reserved seats in train compartment. Indians are definitely more compassionate, hardworking and intelligent, and have strong culture, but they aren't conscientious. We don't do WHAT IS RIGHT. I know a lot of friends will term me non patriotic for sprouting this, but they know in their heart this is the truth. And believe me, I am very very ill equipped to handle that kind of situation.

And that's where America scores. Trust is the foundation of this country. In all possibility, people would not lie to you. Mostly, you can leave your apartment unlocked for the day, and once you purchase a item, be assured that it wont be fake. Once you buy a property, you don't need to worry that someone will make fake papers and snatch it from you. If you are hardworking and intelligent, in all probability you will get your due, and no, you never dare to bribe a policeman here once you are caught speeding. And chances are almost nill that your uncle`s friend will be able to get you a job in a company if you don't have the merits at all. And I respect this country for this sense of being right.

And today this fact was cemented. Obama became the first African American president in the history of United States. For the last few months I have been following elections closely over the net, and I went through a lot of articles where Obama`s color, his origin and Muslim middle name was being criticized vehemently by Whites. But when it came to the collective conscience of America, they did what was right for America..Obama it is. History was made when America rose above all petty issues about color, ethnicity etc and voted for someone they truly believed was right for USA.

And even if Obama is not able to fulfill some of the promises he has made, this election itself would bring back a lot of credibility back for America in the eyes of the world. Its time for change. And it has begun. Lets be part of new America, and in consequence, new world. And remember this date, for it will always be a part of the general knowledge quiz for the coming generations!

Halloween Scare !

PS: Again reiterating, these blogs should be taken with the spirit of fun. The intent is not to be against any community or ethnicity.

Its all over ! So much so that people are planning to dress as 'Economy' this halloween ! You can see the scare. 3 PM - our coffee time in IBM cafteria, when few of my colleagues take a 15 minute break for some chitchat and Mocha, and that number is dwindling fast. I inquired whats the reason, and two things - Job scare, and save some money by making ur own coffee!!!

Ebay fires 15% of workforce, Yahoo plans a massive layoff, Financial sector laying off in 1000`s - Its all accross the board. America's mortgage crisis has spiralled into "the largest financial shock since the Great Depression" and there is now a one-in-four chance of a full-blown global recession over the next 12 months, the International Monetary Fund warned today.

And few people are taking advantage of this situation, like this boss in a Chennai Software startup who is big Rajnikanth fan, and often ridiculed by his employees. And now is his time to get back ! So he calls all this employees one by one, and employees obviously scared by current economic situation, are jittery to say the least.

Boss - So yes Mr. Rangamannar Rangarajan, I heard you needed a leave because you need to get your house coloured(painted) before Diwali...You already have so much color in your name...

Emp - No saaar...mot anymore..abhi sambhar-rice-cocunut chutney ke liye fight hai...who has money...Sorry saar..

Boss - Okie...answer one thing...who can bring Yahoo shares above $30 again ?

Emp - Bill Gates or Microsoft saar.

Boss - Wrong....one and only apna Thambi.... Rajnikaaanth

Emp - Oh yaaa...sorry saaar.

Boss - Bad...you can go now. Send Mr. Thippeswamy Babykutty in

Mr Babykutty comes in

Boss - So yes Mr Babykutty, heard you needed some advance and vacation for getting your 'baby dog' admitted to Anna University

Emp - Sorry saaar...my whole family has studied in Anna University ..Appa, Ammma, Thangamma..so I was thinking about it. But abhi 'idli-curd' is costing sooo much saaaar... So I dont want chutti for my 'kutty'.

Boss - Hmmm...answer this...who can delete Recycle Bin itself ?

Emp - Rajnikanth saaar...

Boss - Good...your leave is granted....send Mr. Vasudevan Apppakuddi in....

Mr Appakuddi comes in

Boss - So Mr. 'Appakuddi'...you need a leave because ur appa made a kudi..I mean jumped from 3rd floor....

Emp - Ya saar....there was a strong wind and his 'lungi' flew...and sensing the economy crisis he knew he cudnt afford more...so jumped from the building trying to rescue it...

Boss - Hmmm....ok answer this....what is the end digit of 22/7..?

Emp - Rajnikanth saaar...He is the end of everything..

Boss - Wow....go rescue ur dad...or his lungi..or whatever.

And it goes on ! But seriously, this crisis is moving into a dangerous direction, and if the all the warnings and scares are any indication, its time to buckle up and prepare for the crash ! I guess nothing will be able to scare Americans more this Halloween ! Though latest development is that Bush, Obama and Mccain have pressed for Rajnikanth`s services to handle this global crisis, so it might be over in just a few minutes !

PS: I came across some of the posters of movies if they had been made in Chennai :-)

Dusshera Dhamaka !

Few busy weeks, and no time for blog. Navratri celebrations are on full swing in Bay Area and to all my friends, here is wishing a Happy Dusshera ! Probably this is the time of the year I tend to miss India most. Nine full days of masti. Those decorated streets, shining and bright with lights all over, roaming aimlessly till late in the night with friends across the city, visiting Durga pandals all over, trying every exciting food shop which had sprouted, visiting on Dusshera to village for annual puja and collecting money from all the elders, and then going to see that fair in evening...gosh !

Though I wonder with so many things going around the world , how are people celebrating it....and just imagined this conversation among a Bengali NRI family, Mr and Mrs Banerjee, and their ABCD son. Mr. Banerjee works for Yahoo and is settled in Funnyvale, Gay Area.

Mrs - Aejee

Mr - Oye I am Banerjee, dont call Aeejee..

Son - Dad...its Tata...and do you mean Volvo ?

Mr - Duffer....again you opened ur mouth...After baking up from ur slip(sleep), first learn to remove ur bed-shit(sheet).

Mr - Dont tell....my bonk went bonkrupt....WAMU..WHOOOOO....and dada Saurav also retired from cricket. Dont know bho(who) will I watch in cricket now once I lose my job in such a bhague(vague) economic condition....anyways they are luking at me like a terrorist in Yahoo once the news leaked tht recent bhomb blasts in India were planned by Indian Yahoo techie..

Mrs - Are Obomo is coming as president na...economy sudhor jaayega..ull bhot(vote) for him na

Mr - Nah ...Ill bhot for Sorah Polin..ooops Mccain

Mrs - Albhes(Always) bhatch (watch) Sorah Polin....tumi kobhi nahi sudhroge...beta lets go for bhojan...Ill call Mrs Choterjee and Mukherjee also

PS: Lots happening all around the world and for those who missed the Presidential Debates, dont worry here is a series of videos on Mccain you wont want to miss.

And for those who missed Drona, not to worry. Its right here for you

Aamir Can !

PS:These blogs are for fun, and should be taken in the right spirit. No offense to any community or ethnicity intended.

Ahmedabad - Gujjendra Krodhi and his assistant Jignesh in Office after a day`s work.

Jignesss...phen (fan) chalao, egg-joss(exhaust) ho gaya. Aur ek peeja (pizza) order kar do.

Yes Sir....Sir , Aamir Khan`s Taare Zameen Par is India`s official entry for Oscars

Kaunsa phillam (film)? ..... Agar Narmada ka pani piya hai to...... bhen (ban) kardo Oscar ko ......jaise 'Fanaa' ko kiya tha......Amrika jaate hain .

Sir....sir...Narmada kaun?...Anyways they always reject your Visa. We have tried many times.

O haan...haan...accha tum log jaa ke aao....jung(young) ho...Kalpess aur Diness ko bhi le ke jaa....'Gujju Kote' me apply kar Viza ke liye..

Sir they have reduced our "quota" also, saying we have enough motels and gas stations in US now.....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bombay - Maharaj Bhagre and his assistant Girpade in Office after a day`s work.

Sir Aaamir Khan`s Taare Zameen Par is selected as India`s entry for Oscars.

What the f***..? 'Hindi' movie at Oscars ?

Sir...sir..you are speaking in English.

O ya...Girpade, how do you say 'What the f***' in Marathi?

Don`r know sir, anyways wife is on the other line.

Ok...call Markar, Todkar, Chillakar, Phodkar, Dhabolkar, MarondKar and we will put an agitation in front of Aamir`s office.

For what sir? What is the objective?

To change the painting competition in movie to Marathi.

Sir...sir(hesitating)...how can they paint in Marathi sir.... ?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So will Tare be able to make it to final five. I doubt. Its definitely a masterpiece. But the whole hardwork was undone in the last 5 minutes, where the movie propagated the very principle it was criticizing, and showed Darsheel getting whole hearted acceptance only after scroing 'high marks'. Also I have often felt academy being averse to happy endings. But they have been welcoming movies with protagonists having physical/mental disabilities (RainMan, Forrest Gump), so lets hope for the best. And if it does, it will be Aamir Khan Productions double whammy after Lagaan (for final five nominations). And being a die hard Aamir fan, I would definitely follow this closely.

Also if anybody can bring Oscar to India, it has to be Aamir Khan. Or shall I say Aamir Can ?

PS: I came across this funny spoof on Taare at IIFA awards. For those who havent watched it, have fun.

Cheeni Kum Hai !

I invariably don't take lunch to office. Its either the cafeteria, or few of my favorite restaurants nearby, well almost . As my office is located in a quiet valley far from civilization, typical of any Research center, for the nearest restaurant you need to drive at least 4-5 miles.

Anyways today was one of the rare days I had some delicious Hyderabadi Biryani from yesterday, so decided to take it to office. Lunch time , went to the common room to get it heated in Microwave. And alas, a long queue of my Chinese coworkers was there. I can imagine there names being like - "Sum Ting Wong , Kum Hia Nao , Dum Gai, Kent Go". To keep me engaged , while we were standing in queue, my colleague gave me an English translation of their popular names -

Sum Ting Wong - That's not right
Kum Hia Nao - Come here ASAP
Dum Gai - Stupid guy
Kent Go - Cant Walk

Amused, I noticed that something was not right today though. They were all huddled together and discussing something, as if Corolla has just released a new model, or hakka noodles have become shorter. All I could hear is - chee chaa chaaaaa...chinglish (chinese english). Anyways my enterprising colleague told me they are discussing the AIG fiasco and in general Chinese form a huge customer base. That explains, else I would have held Toyota responsible! Notice the irony of AIG in the pic below though. Click to enlarge.

Nevertheless, our queue ended, and we reached the Microwave. And as soon as I opened it, it felt I have reached an open air Chinese restaurant. What an 'enticing' smell. Now don't get me wrong, though I am a fan of Chinese food, I didn't want my authentic "Hyderabadi Biryani" to smell like "Chinese Fried Rice" by the time it came out of the oven, so decided against microwaving it.

Over the lunch, my colleague shared an interesting anecdote. Some guy made a call to his insurance agent, and a Chinese operator picked up. Difficult to understand what she was speaking, he asked her name.

I am 'Saw Lee'.
Why are you 'Sorry' ? I just asked your name..what is it?
Ya I am 'Saw Lee'.
Hmmm...is 'Anyone' else there ?
'Annie Wan' is on holiday.
God please give phone to 'Someone'
'Sam Wan' is on call.

Lunch over, was walking towards my office from the plaza, and suddenly realized we are outnumbered. Everywhere I can see Chinese colleagues only, and though Taiwaneese, Japanese all seem similar to me, still I could say Tabu and Big B were not right when they patronized that song - 'Cheeni Kum hai'!

Mumbai ka King kaun ?

Tring tring....I am deep in sleep. Who is calling at this time ? 4o clock in morning ...damn. Whosoever is it, I am not getting up. Tried reaching for phone from my bed, and spilled the water glass over my new iPhone. I am already miffed with $150 first month bill from ATnT, and whosoever is calling, will have to pay for if the phone is gone...well no damage it seems. The number is from India. Picked up the phone, and its an old friend from Pune.

'Sup dude...do you know some consultant there for US Visa ?'

'Abe you dont have any other decent time to call for such an 'important' information? Google it... abhi letme sleep...why all of a sudden ?'

'Yaar things don't seem to be fine here...some other day there were pamphlets in our locality saying that change the name on your nameplates to Marathi..If we have to live like immigrants in our own country, why not live abroad ?

Call over, slept and then left for office in morning. Day passed on smoothly, and back home tuned in to CNN IBN for news. They are showing these clippings of Drona music launch repeatedly, and then Jaya Bachchan`s controversial remarks.

Suddenly after these flash of clippings , some loud background music is played to create tension, a reporter with a grim, stern face and a beard (as if someone has just died in his family) starts highlighting this 'national crisis', and then the images are superimposed with Raj Thackeray`s response to the speech, where he mentions he wont allow any movie from Bacchan family to release in Maharashtra. Amitabh`s apology is shown, and 'Jaya ko lagi Amitabh ki fatkar...' comes the headlines, and in the end comes the poll...'Kya Amitabh ne Jaya ko fatkar lage ke sahi kiya...? Hame SMS kijiye'.......Sad state of national media !

Coming back to the controversy, I don't see any reason why Jaya Bachchan or Big B should apologize. Hindi is our national language, and agree or not, more known and widely spoken. Second thing, speaking in Hindi in Maharashtra is not akin to disrespecting Marathi. Thirdly, Maharashtra is not owned by Raj Thackeray and family, and nowhere the constitution of India or law of the State mentions that people living in Maharashtra will have to speak in Marathi. Indians don't need a Visa to enter Maharashtra, and certainly Mr Raj Thackeray and family are not providing these Visas.

Thinking about Mr. Raj Thackeray, I wonder how his mind works? Is it just the political ambition of a failed politician, or does he really believe he is doing it for the benefit of Maharashtrians ? If latter is the case, it is really worrying. For people often if guided by fanatical obsessions for some group, be it their friends, family, state or religion, go to the extremes of hurting others by threats, violence, force and abuse, they end up bringing shame to the whole community itself, leave alone themselves. And since they believe they are doing it for the good of their community, they don't see any harm in their actions. I am concerned about the political implications in the context of the regional chauvinism that Thackeray is trying to whip up against the non-Marathi speaking population.

What happened to Saddam Hussein and his ambitions ? Whole Islam is bearing the negative connotations of what a handful of Islamic extremists propagated . Musharraf, Osama, all dictators who used threat, fear and violence to rule over others, are now living a shameful life hiding. If their objective was the benefit of Islam, it has backfired in the exact opposite way. Ironically I am writing this on 9/11, a day that reminds me of one of the worst manifestations of terrorism, which shook the whole of United States.

Mr. Thackeray please realize that you are nothing, and if you think you can dominate over others using your threats and force, forget it. If you need to feel important and noticed, grow a beard and go anchor one of these news shows on Indian television, and choose your background music.

PS: Read Big B`s Blog on the controversy, and the video below for his response

Chrome anti Chrome !

Did you know that when you download Google's new Chrome browser, you agree that any "content" you "submit, post or display" using the service — whether you own its copyright or not — gives Google a "license to reproduce, translate, publish, publicly display and distribute" it ? Google's ambitions for Chrome are even larger than we thought; by the letter of this license, Google will own all information that flows through its browser. --- Valleywag

Is this the reason behind Chrome? Google is all about data, and what better way to capture it all than launch your own browser? While testers are having a field day comparing IE vs Firefox vs Safari vs Chrome, what is puzzling to me is why Google launched a browser when the market is already inundated with them ?

Imagine everything you are doing in browser getting logged into some database on Google. So suppose if Mrs Daruwala (or shall I say DaruWali ? ) searched for -- 'My husband doesn't help in household chores...What to do? ' -----And a week later when she launches the browser it will flash this --

"Did your husband , Mr. Bekar Daruwala, start helping you ? If not then:

1) Try calling and complaining to his dad , Mr. SodaWaterWala in India (ad for Reliance India call site)
2) Are you contemplating divorce? (ad for Divorce attorney in US, RumBatliWala and Sons)
3) Try new potential helping and kind partners (ad for Parsi dating site, DikraWala.com)
4) Contemplating Suicide ? (shows you a map of best suicide points near Parsi Gymkhana in Bay Area) "

But seriously, if capturing each and every details about our browsing habits is Google`s intent, I can see an internet world totally devoid of privacy, which is a really scary thought. And if this is their hidden motive , I am totally anti Chrome.

Et tu Google ?

PS: One of my friends sent this comic about how Gates is reacting to Chrome in his retirement mansion ! Have fun :)

Fighting with Cancer...Even a dollar is a great help !

Driving down on Monterey, finally Friday is over. Long weekend ahead, and mind automatically tends to go in relaxation mode on the advent of these. Though there is just one extra day of vacation, you feel this is the time to take a break and relax a little.

Nearing home, I tend to stop in a complex housing Walmart, Blockbuster among others to do some essential purchasing. Probably I need some good movies, and hmmm...lets take few cans of Heineken too. Phew, my Marlboro pack is ending also. Starbucks in way, so lets get some Cappuccino.

Its a hot day today, and it has been like this for the last couple of weeks. Temperature in late 80`s maybe.....and we need some rain. As I stop at the left turn signal to go into the complex, I see an old lady sitting on the road divider, with a sign which says 'Fighting With Cancer...Even a dollar is a great help' .

I have seen people utilizing this signal often, and most of them giving varied reasons why they need money. Some of them are bankrupt, some are homeless...all kind of ploys people use. I am not getting fooled by them, I always tell myself. I have been seeing this lady for the last couple of weeks...but there is something about this lady, something so full of pathos......

Thinning Grey hair, wrinkled face, tattered clothes, body so fragile, and eyes so full of sadness. Its hot, and blazing sun rays are directly falling on her. And she is sitting, looking at us within the cars with expectation....probably someone will roll down the window and offer her a dollar or so. But no one is interested. Maybe we all are now accustomed to people like this on this particular signal. Its my brothers birthday today, so let me give her something, I thought. My hands began reaching for my wallet, and suddenly the signal turned Green. Leave it.....and I drove ahead. Anyways these people are mostly fakes, so be it. Why should I waste my dollar?

Back home after my purchase, I was sipping my Cappuccino, sitting in my air conditioned apartment. A friend called, and reception was weak inside, so I went outside the apartment to talk to him. Lit up my cigarette, and suddenly I realized that its really hot. Phew, threw down the whole cigarette, came inside, and trashed the coffee down the drain. Its hot,and I cant have either.

Call over, suddenly the image of the old woman flashed in my mind. There was something different about her today. Her hands were shaking, and shaking vigorously. Why I didn't realize it ? I haven't noticed that before. Its really hot, and if she is sitting there under the penetrating sun rays, asking for help, she would have a genuine reason. Probably she is really sick. Probably she really needs help for her cancer. And I just threw my cigarette and Cappuccino worth $4 down the drain. And she just wanted a dollar.... And the way she looked at me, there was so much expectation, and so much ...... Filled with guilt,I hopped back in the car, and started driving towards that signal. I will give her 10 bucks , ask her to get dinner, and request her to leave for the day. She looked typically like anyone`s grand mom, and probably life hasn't been fair to her.

Reached the signal, but she was nowhere to be found. Rolled down the window, and asked another person sitting there, who is asking help for his bankruptcy. 'Where is the old lady who was here an hour ago ?' I asked. 'Bro, she suffered a Heat Stroke probably half an hour ago, and then the cops came and took her somewhere, probably to some hospital'.

I was zapped.....such a coincidence....I have been an agnostic, but is this Gods way of telling me that I am there, and you need to believe in me?......How can such a coincidence happen....probably her hands were shaking vigorously because of that only, and if I had stopped and helped, may be she would have left the place, and been fine...

Suddenly the signal turned Green again.....and I drove ahead...

Marriage Proposal , IT professional`s way !

Yes, I am doing all this to shorten my life, and even on weekends. Have been busy on work front, and it seems the status quo is going to be maintained for while. Add to it there are some things cropping up in life which need remedy. So lesser time to give to blog. Hope to be back as soon as things return to normalcy.

Meanwhile take a look at this. You would have heard and seen all kinds of ways to propose for marriage, but this one takes the cake.

Marry Me Leslie !

So I look like Richard Gere or Jesse Bradford ?

Today I spent my time playing with some cool gadgets, on iPhone and some from Google. Results of some of them you can see around this site, though there are two which I found really interesting. So thought of sharing them with you.

MyHeritage.com is a site where you can create your family tree. You can build your whole family lineage there, so I would request all my family members to go and register there. More interesting and fun part though is their Face Recognition software, which actually finds celebrity look alikes for you!

I tried with mine, and to further inflate my already floating ego, it came up with Richard Gere!!!! Realizing in horror that the girls around the globe will be after my phone number once the news leaks, I tried with another pic and this time it decalred that I resemble Amisha Patel ???? Can you believe this...I dont want Vikram Bhatt chasing me after reading this. So I tried with a high resolution pic this time, and I think results were more in range. So with much humility I say Jesse Bradford resembles me :-)

Try it. Its real fun . Another good gadget was for iPhone, downloadable via Apple app store, GPS Tracker. You install the client on phone, and it will post your location on a server and will draw your trail on a Google map. Exciting! Information about is on the side bar of blog. Click on the link there and enter the userid and password given. You can see my location on map. So all you guys can actually track where I am at a particular time ,and why I am not picking your calls :-)

But before you all get too excited with wild ideas, let me add that it will update the server with locations only when I activate the client(thanks to Apple`s policy). So you will see me when I want you to see. But suppose I activate it, and I am speeding from SFO to LA, you can actually see my car accelerating on highway ! See a demo of this on their site:

Car on Highway Demo

Track me if you can :-)

Yeh Jo Desh Hai Tera !

Reached office pretty late, and once there, went for my regular morning Mocha to cafeteria. Saw a familiar smiling Indian face outside the cafe, on his phone. Smiled , waved, and walked towards the coffee stall. Lady there, knowing my regular routine, didn't even bother to ask and proceeded to make my extra hot Mocha with whipped cream. Coffee ready, I walked outside towards the back of cafeteria, overlooking lush green mountains, and I can see some cows grazing there. My favorite place in the campus. Took my seat, flipped Marlboro open and lit it up. Pretty much everyday routine. Calming and peaceful. Nature has its own way of soothing mind. Sets the tone for the whole day.

Just when I was observing some IBMers playing Volleyball and enjoying my morning coffee, that Indian colleague ( he is here for a week from Bangalore ) walked and wished Independence Day, and I wished him back. After some regular office gossips, he asked me how long I have been here, I told him pretty close to five years.
'Then this Independece day shay wont matter to you guys right ? I mean anyways you all leave India for more money and more materialistic comforts, leaving your family their on your own, leaving your country......patriotism wism sab broing bate lagti hongi ?'. I smiled and nodded, and excused myself on the pretext of meeting.

Day passed with regular office chores, but his words remained in my subconscious mind , and kept haunting me throughout. In the evening we had a 'Beer and Banter' party in IBM, and there that gentleman was. He came, and we started chatting.

'So basically from Bangalore?

No no, we are from small town in Uttranachal

Oh ok. So parents and all there?

Yes, whole family is there

Must be visting often?

Nahi yaar kisko time milta hain.....Saal me ek ya do bar...Bangalore me wife hai, kids hai....so no leaves...

So dad is working there in Uttranchal ?

Retired...on pension, I try to help, par apne kharche itne ho jaate hai...

So can you explain whats the difference between my and your situation ? For the last five years I have been visiting India almost every year, spending around a month with my parents, and though I may sound immodest saying this, have probably helped my family more than you even have the intent to.....do you end up doing some social service for India to claim you are more patriotic than me ?...cause thats the only one thing I haven't done, and have really a good heartfelt intent of doing...how do you intend to contribute to India.....?'

Are yaar tu to bura maan gaya....I was just joking in the morning...Lets go and get one more Beer....'

Back home, and listening to this soulful tune from Rahman, and these lyrics....Isnt it art in its highest glory ?...Just gives me goosebumps whenever I listen to it.

'Mitti ki jo khushboo, tu kaise bhoolaayega
Tu chaahe kahin jaaye, tu laut ke aayega
Nayi nayi raahon mein, dabi dabi aahon mein
Khoye khoye dilse tere, koyi ye kahega
Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta'

Yes we do feel guilty, of leaving our motherland, our family back there in order to make a better future for ourselves. And we do have a conscience, and we know our responsibilities, and where our roots are. We do miss those loved ones, those familiar lanes, that warmth. And we will figure out a way to fulfill these responsibilities towards our country, our parents. Nobody needs to remind us.

Happy Independence Day.

Singh is King - Even at Olympics !

What a shot ! First individual Gold in more than 100 years, and first Gold at Olympics after 25 years! And this historic feat was achieved by Abhinav Singh Bindra. What a coincidence that while 'Singh is King' is rewriting Bollywood records across continents, another Singh was breaking records in his own way at Beijing.

Click here to access Abhinav Bindra`s Personal Blog

The news met with unprecedented euphoria among Indians world over. So will this lead to India diverting its obsessive fascination from Cricket to other sports ? Will this really inspire Indians to live and dream those other spectacular forms of Sport, which 'Chak De India' last year came very close to sprouting, albeit just for hockey ?

Talking about Indian Hockey history at Olympics, picture this stat:

'Between 1928 to 1956, India won the gold medal in hockey consecutively six times. They played 24 Olympic matches, won all 24, scored 178 goals (at an average of 7.43 goals per match) and conceded only 7'

How could things go so drastically wrong that we didnt even qualify to participate this year ?

Maybe we need to pull Shahrukh 'Kabir' Khan back from mega crores generating IPL meetings to find the answer......or do we ?

PS : USA won Bronze in Gymnastics today . Kevin Tan is a part of the team which got the bronze. His father, Peter Tan is a veteran IBMer stationed in office next to mine. Hearty congratulations to you buddy !!

Picture abhi baki hai ?

08-08-08 ---- A Snapshot

Not a good week so far, what with Perm going in audit, and workload increasing beyond capability. I have also been down with cough and cold for the last 2-3 days, and today had fever,so decided to skip office to take some rest, or 'work from home' so to say , a practice quite widespread in IT world.

Though couldn't continue after 5pm, and felt asleep only to be waken up by a call from a friend , and realizing in horror that I have skipped dinner time, and its 10 pm ! So what to do now ? Cook something, which current health condition doesn't encourage, or drive through to Taco which appears an equally ordeal task? The friend was gracious enough to offer to bring something , which I declined. Rummaged through the refrigerator, found the leftover fried rice from yesterday...saved for the day. Thank god for all these inventions, or should I thank Germans/Americans credited with invention of refrigerator?

Dinner over..what to do next ? Body has its own way of reacting, and more you rest, the more rest it demands. Lethargy breeds more lethargy...don't feel like doing anything. But the date today, 08/08/08, seems so inviting that it goads mind to do something .....probably take a snapshot of life for 08/08/08?

Often when you are alone talking to yourself, often when you are sick, lying on bed doing nothing, you think about a lot of things which you normally wont in your day to day existence, or maybe you don't have time to. How has life been so far, and how is it going to be? Whats the state of mind today ? I don't know...but for this moment the predominant mind state is that of 'contentment'. I feel satisfied. The course life has taken so far, I get the feeling that it has been years well spent. Its very surprising, considering that I am a very edgy person, almost always restless.

Lots of things flash up in mind.....growing up in the by lanes of Varanasi, ghats on Ganga, mom, dad, brothers, baba, aaji, bua, cousins, amitabh..... regular visits to Sankat Mochan temple, school life, fooling friends, bikes, fruit beer, first love, long phone calls, the 'S' factor..... preparing for competitive entrance exams , meeting that special someone , mom and dad coming to drop me to a college on a hill near Nainital , first time away from home, seeing tears in dad`s eye for first time,......pulsating hostel life, rum and chicken parties, acting in plays, girlfriends, cruel ragging, street fights, topping the batch, cheating in exams, expulsions, moist eyed farewell from college ..... Delhi, Call Center life, preparing to fly to States, the realization of losing someone very close to you, heartbreak.......flying to the States, faces of some very special friends coming to drop off at station, mom breaking up at airport.......Texas, working round the clock in a restaurant, first Car, clubbing/parties to the extremes, sitting through the nights in labs doing projects, proudly wearing Graduation robe......moving to the most vibrant place in states, California, working in one of the biggest companies in world, awards, promotion, fulfilling few responsibilities towards parents ....been there, done that. Have probably experienced life in all its forms....What next?

Is the most important phase of life yet to start ? Is a good marriage, a caring life partner, or that million dollar house, or adorable kids, or hefty bank balance....are they the factors from now on which take your life to blissful conclusion , towards that perfect ending ? Don`t know, really clueless. Right now it certainly feels like intermission point, though the story after intermission looks linear, with no surprises ? Or as the popular movie dialogue goes, 'picture abhi baki hai' ?

Maybe another snapshot on 12-12-12 will give an idea.

And now...how Americans see rest of the world !

Continuing from my previous post, one of my friends liked it very much, and it reminded her of something she has come across regarding America and the rest of world. She sent me the link, and I am posting it here for you. Enjoy... As with the previous post, click on the image above to zoom it.

On hindsight, I would love to see something which depicts how Islamic countries see the world , specially America :)

Californians - How they see rest of America

Came across this interesting graphics. Click on the image above to zoom it. Although funny, it does seem to reflect sweeping generalizations among native Californians.

We pay ridiculously high taxes, spend our lifetime paying house mortgages for record high real estate, and unfortunately pay the highest gas prices in the country.

Click here to see the map of Gas prices across USA.

And so we tend to justify. To ourselves, to others, that we are doing a rational thing by choosing to stay here. Often we tend to talk about nicest weather in US, vibrant economy, IT capital of world, natural beauty, good social life ,larger number of activities in entertainment sector, etc to justify the higher prices.

But are these high prices really deserving ? Global warming is already threatening our nice weather and natural beauty, and IT has spread its legs across the USA. So is it a time bound bubble, which wont sustain over years to come ? Or the age old adage 'You get what you pay for' holds true in terms of California?

Truly Unforgettable !

What an experience. Exhilarating, amazing and exhausting. And really Unforgettable! My voice is still down with all the shouting and cheering.

True to Indian tradition, evening started an hour late, resulting in 15000-20000 capacity Oracle Arena being surrounded with long queues of admirers. What surprised me was the eclectic mix of audience, people from 8 till 80, and a healthy mix of nationalities from India, Pakistan, Gulf, host of other Asian countries, Mexicans, and yes Americans too.... Nevertheless we were inside , and seated.

Show started with Reteish Deshmukh. A much better personality off screen, he set the tone, followed by Preity, Aishwarya`s performance, and Abhishek`s surprise entry among the audience. By this time things have gathered real momentum. Almost everyone was on their feet. But we all were waiting for the big one...Big B himself.

And once clippings of Amitabh started on screen, showing his different tours across the world, the crazy hysteria he generates across continents, there was a silence...of that before the storm. And then Big B appeared. Claps, whistles, cheers, shouts, you name it. Imagine 20000 deafening your ears in unison.

For me, I was just stunned. It was that rare schoolboy moment where you see your hero, someone who has had such a strong impact on your psyche for all of your adolescent life. Wish I was nearer to stage !

Another hysteria was to follow once Madhuri came on stage , starting with ek, do teen, and almost making every single individual member in audience shake a leg or two.Other highlights of the evening were Being Amitabh section, where Abhishek peformed on Khaike paan, and Reteish on Jumma. Followed by 'Dola Re' on Aishwarya and Madhuri.

And the best was saved for last. Amitabh`s recital of his famous dialogues from Agneepath, Deewar,Kabhi Kabhie, Silsila etc. Even though we all have heard them 1000 times, there was a pin drop silence in the otherwise boisterous arena while he was enacting them, and it was a sheer joy to hear it all live....'Khush to bahut hoge tum'!

And you must have guessed, it ended with Kajrare, which provided such a fitting climax for an exciting show.

While I was driving back to my home at 1:30 in night, wishing that I could get one pic with him, I got a call from a friend, fellow IBMer.
'Come to Marriott. They are staying here and coming anytime'.

Drove faster, breaking all speed limits in sight ( yes, inspite of getting a speeding ticket recently :), and reached there. Throngs of people outside the gate, waiting for them to come back......Alas they made an entry through back gate! If only everything had a perfect ending.

Nevertheless , khush to bahut hoon main:)

Bachchan Bonanaza !

Finally going to see someone live I have grown up watching on screen, and subconsciously he has affected my behavior in subtle ways. My biggest hero since my childhood days. I remember bugging parents for his movies, collecting his pics, buying audio cassettes blindly if Big B featured in them...so many memories.

Though I dont remember this, my bua tells me when he met with an accident on the sets of Coolie, I would often say - 'bhagwan imtab bachan ko bach lo' -:)

We will be there....if anyone else is coming....letme know.
Oracle Arena this Sunday evening.

Kahani Kismat Ki !

Busy weekend. And an expensive one too. Ended up splurging on a pair of RayBan, guess to get over the disappointment of not getting hold of an iPhone still. And catching up both Dark Knight and Kismat Konnection.

Dark Knight is excellent. A classic tale of evil vs virtue, made philosophical by Joker`s (played brilliantly by Heath Ledger) musings to Batman which might go down in the annals of moviedom as one of the most discussed - 'You complete me'. In my opinion, best movie in the superhero genre.

Kismat Konnection is one time watchable fare, particularly for its foot-tapping music, and some subtle moments. Though it did goad me to come to this post.

Throughout my life, I guess I have taken my own decisions. And have endured beautifully the goods and bads that have come with them. In situations they might have been guided by some popular perceptions, but nevertheless they have been my own. And it has worked out beautifully for me so far.

Often a subconscious believer of 'karma', I always thought life was like a mathematical fuction, if there is a particular input, you will always get a predefined calculated output. In layman terms, you will get your dues fairly, depending on your efforts.

I have been a staunch believer of this philosophy, and still do so. Though certain happenings around me sometimes tend to shake this belief. People putting in the same amount of effort, same inputs, and still not getting the output which I thought the mathematical function should give? Or I myself applying the same effort in certain situations and getting results which differ significantly from my last effort...why is it?

Is there something else affecting all this...luck, kismet, timing, god ? What is luck ? Is it another name for timing? Or a combination of a lot of complicated factors not in your hands ?

Timing, I believe can affect....your time has to be right. But if you are deserving, can it consistently hamper the results you get over a longer period of time?

No the movie doesn't discuss these points :)

Few Responses

Priyamda the article
http://brainwave.wordpress.com/2008/03/19/return-to-india/
was great. It really makes for an insightful reading, without taking sides.

Also your observation that the faster speed of 3G network justifies the higher overall price for iPhone 3G definitely makes sense.

Shalu, Ankur might have told u a lot of other incidents, apart from the one mentioned in 'Media Monster', but don't believe all of them :)

Suchi, what I talked to my mom was very boring :)....but when are we getting the party for your August adventure ?

Chitra since you identified with 'such a desi', I guess we can now form a majority whenever voting is required for a Bollywood bonanza :)

And Dubeyji, regarding your responses, lets have a conference call to dwell over them...what say?

And lastly, Shveta`s response to 'It wasnt productive' which summarized that post so wonderfully.

"Beautifully said...I totally second the view. Being a woman I totally understand, how difficult managing children, in-laws, husband and your own aspirations can be.So what if our mothers did not become jetsetters, they surely ensured we did."

Here iCome.....Again !

Is it madness ? Same frenzy, and maybe even bigger, than the last time. I could only remember these kind of queues for Amitabh`s movies...anyways seeing the long lines, my plans to get hold of iPhone maybe defferred by a day or two. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs must be smiling, feeling like some demi-god!

It wasn't productive !

Office over, drove down to caltrain station to pick up one of my undergrad batchmates who was visiting Bay Area from Banagalore . With the mushrooming of IT industry, its a rarity if any Bangalorian doesnt have US visa on his passport.

Meeting old college mates has its own charm. We got some delicious Hyderabadi biryani and over a couple of beers, started conversing about college life. Professors, batch mates, hostel pranks, girlfriend(s), ragging...all got discussed. And then the topic veered towards todays women.

We both were discussing the progress today`s women have made, how they are handling professional as well as personal lives so well, and are making contributions no lesser than men. We both admired their feats, their achievements. Amidst all this , he mentioned something....

'Compared to today`s generation, I think our moms and aunts just wasted their lives. It wasnt productive at all. They weren't skilled enough.....' Phew...that acted as a spoiler. I didn't say anything, but was left with my thoughts once he was gone....

Admire present, but dont forget the contributions of past. And whats your definition of skills sir ? Since I cant give others` example, Ill tell you how my mom`s life wasn't productive! My dad has four sisters, and when my mom came into the family it was a big family with dadaji, daadiji also there. First few years of her life went in adjusting with the in-laws , seeing our buas married, rest was spent in taking care of her three kids, making sure that all the desires of the kids supersede hers. And once we grew up, health problems started with dadaji-dadiji and since then she is making sure they are taken care of. She has not been able to go out of station for more than a week or two in the least 4-5 years because of their health issues. Not to mention she has supported dad so well throughout.

Imagine holding such a big family together for more than 30 years, and yes I agree with you it doesn't require any skills. Living with so many egos, day in and day out, losing your identity, so as to make sure every one else around you is ok, doesn't require any skills. Sir, how many of your skilled women (and men) of today (and of yesteryears) will be willing and able to do this for even 3 months ?

And sir, that you are sitting today here in the States as an educated, balanced ,admired individual who didnt spend his childhood in day care, or a boarding school, who grew up in a full family with granddad, grand mom all around, thats her productivity.

Go measure it.

PS3 vs Wii

Funny advert, isnt it? Though with all her efforts, she still failed to convince me to get Wii :)

PS3 or Wii, I have been comparing both of them of late. Sony just won the high-definition video format war with their Blu-Ray technology, against Toshiba`s HD DVD format. So for HD lovers, Blue Ray should be the way.

Here is some statistical data from 2007 to ponder over:

'When it comes to consoles, 2007 rang in the year of the Wii, ending the reign of the Playstation gaming systems.

The Wii beat Playstation 3 (PS3) in the number of units sold in December, according to a report by the NPD Group. The Nintendo Wii sold 604,200 units while Sony's PS3 sold 490,700.'

I have a Panasonic 1080p resolution tv , and I am inclining towards PS3 for obvious reasons, although Wii is the number one in gaming market. Does anyone has Wii experience with HDTV ?

Jaye tu.....ya jaye na !

What a start for the long weekend -- 2nd speeding ticket at the same spot on the same time by the same officer. Coincidences...what are they ?

Watched Jane Tu over the weekend, and must say, a good attempt. Although expectations from Aamir productions are always more, nevertheless, given the genre of the movie, it scored in execution. Story isn't novel, but the power of the movie lies more in its characters, the punch lines, the words.

It takes you back to your college/school days, when friends and crushes and parties were the be-all and end-all of existence. College life over, the girl mentions 'Pata nahi paanch saal kaha nikal gaye'....'Phone pe beta, phone pe'-- pat comes the mom`s reply. This kind of tounge-n-cheek humor makes the film so endearing, so go and watch it.

What was it about those days, why do we miss them so much. Why we always almost have few friends from our earlier years who are privy to the each and every episode of our lives. Things which you can not discuss with anyone else , you can discuss with them......why is it?

Is it because we know we aren't being judged, or is it because in those days the relationships were not based on give/take, or 'fairness' so to say ? 'If you do this, I will do that' - that was not the mantra. There were no egos, no attempt to get the best deal for yourself out of every move. It was just innocence. We weren't grown ups, our brains were not 'mature' enough to decipher profit/loss formula. One of my best friends, Dubey aka rabbit, always gets chided from me -'Grow up'

Dubey.....dont grow up. Its not worth it.

Are you iReady ?

California passes the rule from today prohibiting mobile handset usage while driving. This means one mandatory accessory to get while getting your iPhone on July 11!

For all of you planning to get iPhone on July 11, here are few announcements from at&t

"Today , AT&T said the iPhone 3G's vaunted $199 price would only be available to three kinds of customers:

-- people who bought the iPhone before July 11

-- customers new to AT&T, or ones activating a totally new line

-- existing AT&T customers who are eligible for an upgrade discount

This means current AT&T customers with handsets other than the iPhone will have to pay $399 for an 8G-byte iPhone 3G or $499 for the 16G-byte model unless they are due for a phone upgrade discount.

AT&T Mobility put some asterisks on its iPhone 3G pricing Tuesday but also revealed an interesting option coming in the future: an iPhone without a contract.

In the news release disclosing terms and monthly rates for iPhone 3G service plans, the carrier hinted at the upcoming offer without saying anything about when it will become available. Freedom will come with a price -- US$599 for an 8G-byte device and $699 for a 16G -- but this will mark the first time consumers in the U.S. are able to buy an iPhone without being tied down to a two-year contract."

Media Monster - 2nd part

Another post on media exaggeration, and isnt it coincidental that Big B posted on the same issue hours after my last post :)

Media monster

I often wonder, why is media obsessed with Britney spears and Jeniffer aniston...How could they, or any sane person in the world for that matter, could handle so much exaggerated intrusion in their personal life?

I can tell you from personal experience how much exaggeration media can do. I was in
the 2nd-3rd year of my Engineering,in the picturesque hills of Kumaon near Nainital. Our Engineering college was surrounded by isolated green hills, with none of the modern amenities of life.

It was Dusshera, and we didnt have vacations to go home. We were sitting one evening getting bored in hostel, and decided to go to nearby village to watch Ramlila. So we formed a group of 8-9 students, and through the darkness of night and small hilly tracks, reached there.

Boys being boys, someone did something which irked the local villagers there, and they ended up beating one of our batch mates. Its a crime...you are not supposed to mess with college students....

We came back to hostel, mobilized the whole hostel gang, and went back to the village in the middle of night. We ended up destroying whole ramlila setup, including tents, swords, etc,.Since Diwali was near, we ended up burning some crackers and throwing them towards the huts of villagers....nobody was hurt, and it all ended there.

Amar Ujala local edition, next morning Headlines:

"Engineering college students attacked sleeping villagers in night, and even fired bullets from guns. They tried to disturb communal harmony destroying Ramlila pandal, therby desecrating the Gods and hurting the religious sentiments of local villagers. Few locals are hurt badly, and have taken treatment in nearby hospitals"...

Phew...can you believe this ? It was not until we got up next morning and went through all the DC meetings and finally suspensions for 6 of us, did we realize how much exaggeration occurs in print and electronic media...

That our suspension did end up giving us Dusshera holidays is another matter altogether :)

Tujhe sab kuch pata hai na.....

After months, if not years, I ended up talking so much with my mom. Ambani senior might have been happy as I spent close to three hours yesterday using Reliance India call -:). And boy, was it therapeutic!

We often talk to our conscience, we often turn to our friends for advice, take refuge in a lot of other things when faced with 'seemingly' daunting issues in our lives....

Believe me.....nobody in this world knows you better than her. You want to know yourself....want to know whats keeping you down....discuss with her . There are times when self-respect, ego, hurt might keep her a little distant....but when the subconscious core takes over, there is nothing but love for you.

So go and talk, and in turn make Anil Ambani richer by few dollars...or is it Mukesh ?

Bill Gates departs...

Bill Gates dies in a car crash and ends up in front in front of StPeter

St. Peter says I don’t know what to do with you. You’ve created many jobs and helped a lot of people in the new electronic age, but you’ve also been a royal pain to some of our big contributers. I’ll tell you what, I’ll let you have a look at heaven and hell and choose for yourself.

So St. Peter shows Bill heaven, with the clouds and Angels and harps, and Bill thinks to himself: “OK, as far as it goes.”

Then St. Peter shows Bill hell, with scantily clad bathing beauties on a tropical beach with palm trees and Bill thinks to himself: “This is a no-brainer!”

So Bill says to St. Peter: “I’ll take hell!”

Two weeks later St. Peter thinks to himself: “I wonder how Bill is doing?”

So he drops by hell and finds Bill chained to a wall, consumed by flames and screaming in agony.

“Where are the bathing beauties, where’s the beach?” Cried Bill. “This isn’t what you showed me!”

“That”, said St. Pete, “was a demo.”

====================================================================================

For all you Bill bashers, he is leaving Microsoft today. Growing up as engineering students, we were all fascinated by his rags to riches story.

Inspite of all the pain that Window is, we cant live without it.....So hats of to
you Bill, you will be missed...and definitely the 'Bill Jokes' which were so part of our office lunch conversations ...

Like father, like son

'Father calling, father calling...call back'.....Thats how normally my dad leaves me a message. With voice messaging still being very rare in India....dad thinks this is some kind of telegram service and treats it in the same manner! One of my friends`s fathers misatkes GPS voice direction as being the voice of his american girlfrnd named GPS!

I often wonder, why does Indian culture places so much emphasis on mothers, with fathers being sidelined. There are reams of Indian literature about Krisha-Yashoda...and tons of Indian movies, songs placing so much emphasis on mothers. Not to take anything away from our dear mothers, but are our fathers in any way less responsible for our upbringing, our success, or do they love us any lesser?

If I think about myself, a major part of my personality is shaped by how my father is,and that may include good as well as bad. My dad has always been famous for his full on non-veg parties, and his philosophy was that if someone has come to our house for food, he/she should always return fully overwhelmed, and completely satisfied.
I thinks this is something which has come to me subconsciously, and I make sure
that food never falls short....if its wasted...so be it.

My dad has often heard complaints about how he treats servants in our house. They are as important part of our family, and sometimes more, than us. 'Sar pe mat chadao'...ppl would always tell. While starting my American sojourn, I worked in a restaurant while I was doing my Masters . It surprised me how well I could mingle with anybody and everybody in kitchen, how easily I could relate to and form frienships with people from each and every strata of society, and if anyone has to take credit for it...it has to be him.

'Son calling, son calling...thank you dad...and a belated father`s day'.

Eternal Search !

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is behaving like a jilted lover. After the Yahoo fiasco, he is still searching for 'search' business.

There are rumors of Microsoft eyeing Facebook, and Steve rubbishes them as just rumors. 'Search is where it all starts'....he has to say.

Hmmmmm....Will anything come out of chasing Google in its own game...google is miles ahead and its not going to give search to you. Facebook, as analysts are mentioning, might be the best bet right now, for targetting content based ads.

Coming to Yahoo....its rumored they are now luring new hires by adding severance package, and a lot of top execs are leaving...is it true?

Lets take a ring side view and watch the match ...Microsoft-Yahoo-Google.
Unless ofcourse you are an employee of either of them :)

Such a desi !

I wonder sometimes why is word 'Desi' here in the States has such a negative connotation. The moment you are planning to watch a bollywood tear-jerker, go to an indian restaurant , attend a bollywood party...or for that matter simple things like having a desi tv channel....people are like....hmmmm

I have nothing against embracing the new culture, trying new things, and trying and adapting your lifestyle to make it more in sync with your current surroundings...'WHEN IN ROME, DO THE ROMANS...-)

But arent the same things which are keeping you close to your motherland...they remind you of your roots, and keep taking you back to the lanes ,cities, places where you have spent the most formative years of your lives. Innocent friendships, mindless blabber at nukkad shops...

And havent we all heard about the 'circle of life'....when people are in the last stages of their lives, dying so to say, they want to be in the place where they were born...why is it so?

For me, its the Times of India webpage which still starts my morning ... CNN can wait.

Mere pass iPhone hai !

I have camera,ipod,gps,camcorder,laptop...kya hai tumhare pass...haan
Mere pass iPhone hai!

Sounds too good to be true.... Come July 11 and a lot of us are planning to line up on Apple and At&t stores across the states to get the new iPhone. People who were reluctant to get it earlier, now with a price tag of $199 for 8GB(which costs $399 now), are all game for it....But is it really what it promises?

Lets look at the data plan, which has gone up by $ 10. This means 69.99 per month if you’re going to use both internet and voice features....so since you have to sign up a contract of 2 years with at&t, you end up paying 10*24 = $240 more than what you were paying for usage...so the total cost of ownership and operation is up by $40, and thats only for 2 year period:).....

Is it still a good deal....?

To go or not to go !

One of the colleagues in my office has decided to go back to India, for good. Which brings me to the oft repeated debate which keeps on going among Indian diaspora ( and I assume among immigrants from other countries too ) is to go back to your country or not.

In my opinion, and this is just mine, key is to be flexible. I have seen people claiming they are going to go back after X milestone, but once X is within reach, Y comes in picture. On the other hand there were people claiming they wont ever, and finally packed up and went back.

What is the cirteria ? Once we come to states to study etc, priorities are much different. Your idea of life is cars, clubs, games, materialistic comforts...things which are little difficult to avail in India in a very short span of time. And then comes that period of time when you have got all that, and you are in different 'ashram' of life so say, married with kids etc. Domestic help, which is so difficult and out of reach in States for an average person, children`s educational concerns, ,longing to be with your family back home.....rules change.

hmmmm....that reminds me of some calls I have to make to India...cyao.

Choices - They make or break you - Or do they?

I was often told , at the very end, when you sit back and analyze your life, the result would be the sum total of the choices you make in life.

Is it true ? Do we as a person have individual traits, charatcteristics which define the path of our life, or ultimately the choices we make carve that path ? Or our traits, characteristics lead is to make a particular choice which in turn forms the toto of our life?
